چکیده

In this paper, we develop a Hamiltonian variational formulation for the nonequilibrium thermodynamics of simple adiabatically closed systems that is an extension Hamilton's phase space principle in mechanics. We introduce Hamilton-d'Alembert thermodynamic by considering nonlinear nonholonomic constraints type. particular, case which given Lagrangian degenerate, construct incorporating primary via Dirac's theory constraints. illustrate our with some examples friction, internal matter transfer as well chemical reactions.

A Variational Formulation of Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics for Discrete Open Systems with Mass and Heat Transfer

We propose a variational formulation for the nonequilibrium thermodynamics of discrete open systems, i.e., discrete systems which can exchange mass and heat with the exterior. Our approach is based on a general variational formulation for systems with time-dependent nonlinear nonholonomic constraints and time-dependent Lagrangian. For discrete open systems, the time-dependent nonlinear constrai...

Nonequilibrium thermodynamics for open systems.

We develop the general equation for the nonequilibrium reversible-irreversible coupling (GENERIC) framework of nonequilibrium thermodynamics for open systems. A clear distinction between bulk and boundary contributions to the Poisson and dissipative brackets employed to generate reversible and irreversible contributions to time evolution from energy and entropy allows us to formulate the bulk e...

Variational nonequilibrium thermodynamics of reaction-diffusion systems. III. Progress variables and dissipation of energy and information

We continue, in this article, to develop the formalism of nonequilibrium thermodynamics in variational form. We prove that in the framework of progress variables, the Hamilton–Jacobi equation has always a simple solution, and we prove that this solution becomes a state function if and only if there is a thermodynamic equilibrium for the system. We study an inequality between the dissipation of ...

The Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics of Small Systems

S systems found throughout physics, chemistry, and biology manifest striking properties as a result of their tiny dimensions. Examples of such systems include magnetic domains in ferromagnets, which are typically smaller than 300 nm; quantum dots and biological molecular machines that range in size from 2 to 100 nm; and solidlike clusters that are important in the relaxation of glassy systems a...

Variational nonequilibrium thermodynamics of reaction-diffusion systems. II. Path integrals, large fluctuations, and rate constants

We consider reaction-diffusion systems that can be out of equilibrium. In the preceding article a path integral formation of the Hamilton–Jacobi approximation of the Master equation of such systems. Using this path integral formulation, it is possible to calculate rate constants for the transition from one well to another well of the information potential and to give estimates of mean exit time...
